AVG free A/V program is good. It's not the resource hog that Norton is - it pretty much stays in the background and does it's job. It's not perfect, but then again, I haven't ever seen any A/V program that is. Try it, you'll like it.
It's safe to use, It's probably my first choice for free anti-virus software. But if you're looking to buy I would reckomend Trend Micro PC Cillin Internet Security, it works perfectly for me and it has a really good internet firewall.

I recommend AVG as an anti virus, although eTrust's 12 month free trial is excellent (I'm using it and am extremely impressed).

IF you have Norton currently try this test. Run Norton and get their clean bill of health then download and run AVG and prepare to be mortified at the number of Trojans running in the background that Norton that POS missed. They sell a Pro version which has more features, etc although the free version works quite well. It is better than Norton for several reasons. The program itself is not a memory / resource hog like the Norton products. The updates for viruses are released faster / more often. The Grisoft company actually cares about people!!

But there are more like avast, avg, antivir. Antivir is the second best, but it eliminates 95% of viruses done by a test, while Aol removes 99%. The problem with aol is that they will track your browser history, for their use. While Antivir doesn't.

Norton isn't free. Even if you could get ahold of someone's and download it, Norton won't recognize it because they register each copy and match it with a specific IP then send constant daily updates to the program..which you'll never get making the version you get useless in about a week.

I has tried some title of Antivirus product, some of them is freeware also. When I tried the Antiviruses, I found out that it's not always freeware Antivirus is a bad product, and vice versa. Right now, the Antivirus I currently using is Avast! Antivirus home edition. Just want to get opinion about what Antivirus is the best right now to fight those pesky virus out there? With McAfee, I was always getting viruses and trojans and their system is so hard to maneuver ~ not user friendly at all but both of these programs have kept both of us virus and trojan free and we've had them for a few years now.

One whole gb vanished randomly overnight. So I scanned my computer with the JDiskreport program. I saved a few scans, and found out that alot of space was adding up in a folder called ''Internet Security''. I'm not exactly sure what this folder belongs to. My guess would be my Trend Micro antivirus. Within internet security I pinpointed the exact folder where most of the space was being lost. It was in the Temp folder. What on earth does ''temp'' mean, and can I delete the files inside that folder?

That being said, you might see if your ISP has a special deal on a paid version of antivirus (Comcast offers McAfee for free to all subscribers of their high speed service), see if yours offers something similar.

u can use powerful antivirus such as kepersky or norton antivirus 2007 and panda titanium. this three top software provide powerful protection to your computer. but if u want the normal protection level u can use avg 7.5 or avast 4.7 home edition. but i think avast is better than avg 7.5 because the files database update more frequently than avg 7.5. so your computer get the latest antivirus protection from virus,spyware and adware. moreover this two software is freeware.

Try using AVG antivirus. It offers very good virus protection for free but you have to pay if you want firewall and anti-spyware services.

To compensate that, you can download ZoneAlarm firewall which is also free. Just like AVG, if you want the antivirus and spyware protection you have to pay for those services, but the firewall is free.

For spyware you can use SpywareBlaster. Unlike Spybot or AdAware, this program prevents spyware from being installed in your computer, no scans. For this free version you have to run the updater manually, but if you pay it will get automatic updates.

I would suggest either AVG or Avast. They are both effective, free anti-virus programs for your personal use. They're actually better than Norton, because Norton uses a tremendous amount of system resources such as RAM, whereas AVG and Avast do not. Many people use either AVG or Avast and I'm sure most people will be recommending them.

I would suggest installing AVG free from http://www.grisoft.com/us.homepage. Somewhere on the website there is a free version, but I remember it not being easy to get to when I downloaded it.
AVG, it is used by numerous universities and is free for individual use.
antivirus software in general sucks. Its only as effective as your definitions are updated. Also, virus scanners such as McAfee and Norton tend to bring systems to a halt. I hate virus scanners. If you want to say goodbye to viruses forever, install Linux on your computer.
many people like the free edition of AVG but i personally do not find it reliable, I'd rather go with the free edition of Avast, both are good and I've used both of them but I think Avast is a little better.

I am very interested in these answers because I have the same problem BUT gents who have already answered. AVG is no longer free!! Starting on 2/18 whoever is on a free program will either have to upgrade or end their program. I am really tired of their ''definitions'' waiting for me every morning when I go on-line. I have RAM full of AVG logs and don't know how to delete them--yet. u need a good video card or graphics card along with 512mb ram minimum, do not disable anti virus game will have common virus in them.
Right click on the AVG icon in the taskbar and click on ''guit avg control centre''

But I think its highly unlikely that avg is doing that..It sounds more like your graphics card isn't up to running the game..

Go into start then run and type in dxdiag and try altering the settings..Keep a record of default settings so you can edit them back..
Open the Control Center, double click the Resident Shield and remove the checkmark next to the Turn on AVG Resident Shield. WARNING, any program that asks you to disable AV is HIGHLY suspicious,and will probably infect you.

AVG is the best program to use. I spent 4 DAYS trying to remove a virus from my computer with no success. I can't speak for PCTools Anti-Virus but both the PC Tools Firewall and PC Tools Threatfire are very good.

For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir庐 PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than most ''paid-for'' anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. Uses less then 10 MB RAM on my machine. And did I mention that it's free for life! Works great on my Vista box, too.

I would definitely recommned Kaspersky. I have had multiple trojan horse viruses installed onto my computer and this was one of the only programs that found all of them. If you purchase the software, it comes with all the extras like a firewall, internet security, etc. It's awesome! I purchased it and have not had any problems since. The full internet security and antivirus was 80.00. Well worth it! Most antivirus software have updates weekly, but Kaspersky updates itself every single day, sometimes multiple times a day! They have a free trial for 30 days. Check it out!

As far as a firewall, best for free is the Windows firewall if you are using Windows XP SP2 or Vista. If not you will have to pay for a good firewall program.
Computer Associates Security Suite is offered at many different websites, for free, in various software bundles. It works well.

My broadband service uses it and it came with their package at no extra charge.

Do yourself a favor and make sure you have a REAL virus protector in place and keep it up to date. DO NOT use one of the free registry scrubbers or antivirus tools so many here suggest. Some of these are just ok, but far too many are themselves evilware and most of them are pretty flimsy. Some actually implant other spyware, adware or even viruses or trojans on your system and make things worse--far worse. The problem with a weak antivirus program is that it gives you a false sense of security--like Airborne cold-preventer. Using nothing at all would be better as you would be more careful about where you venture on the Internet.

I have not exaustively tested the top-rated dozen or so serious antivirus programs (of the many dozen out there) but PCWorld has; so has Consumer Reports. AVG is the lowest-rated. I would not depend on first-hand accounts from end-users and amateurs but instead, look for opinions from computer _professionals_ whose job it is to analyze these _essential_ programs. Using a free antivirus program is like buying cancer drugs from that guy on a street corner...

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site.
